Promoting Professional Journalism and Communication Media Ethics in Community Media Practice for Sustainable Development Goals Achievement in Africa
Wilson Okaka
ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Professional journalism and ethical communication practices are pivotal in shaping informed communities, fostering transparency, and accelerating the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Africa. Community media platforms—radio, local newspapers, and online citizen journalism—play a crucial role in democratizing information access and amplifying grassroots voices. However, their effectiveness relies significantly on adherence to journalism ethics and professional communication standards.
Problem Statement: Despite the proliferation of community media in Africa, many operate with limited adherence to journalism ethics, resulting in misinformation, biased reporting, and compromised public trust. The lack of professional training, regulatory frameworks, and access to ethical journalism tools hinders their potential to contribute meaningfully to SDG awareness and implementation. Objectives: To examine the current state of journalism ethics in African community media. To assess the role of ethical communication in achieving SDGs. To identify capacity gaps and recommend best practices for community media practitioners. Methodology: This paper applies a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed journals, African Union and UNESCO policy frameworks, and media codes of conduct. Policy analysis explores national media regulations. Case studies from Uganda, Nigeria, and Kenya highlight ethical challenges and responses in community journalism.
Results: Findings reveal that community media with ethical journalism practices significantly influence SDG-related behavioral change, civic engagement, and policy advocacy. However, challenges persist due to poor remuneration, political interference, and inadequate professional training.ConclusionsStrengthening ethical standards in community journalism directly enhance their credibility and social impact. Sustainable media development requires strategic investments in ethics training, institutional support, and policy enforcement. Recommendations: Integrate journalism ethics in community media training curricula. Establish national and regional regulatory bodies for media ethics compliance. Support partnerships between universities, NGOs, and media houses for capacity building. Encourage self-regulation through community journalist associations. Promote media literacy among audiences to demand ethical journalism.
