Metaverse in Physiotherapy: Modeling Treatment Equipment and Supplies as Applied Technology for Interdisciplinary Learning

ABSTRACT:
The use of technology resources for teaching, learning, and content retention in the health field has gained prominence over the years. Not only are Artificial Intelligences used as objects of study, but other resources are also relevant, such as the Metaverse. Currently, the Metaverse, used solely for commercial or recreational purposes, has fallen into disuse and suffered from budget cuts and reduced commercial investment. However, its use as an interdisciplinary learning method remains a relevant resource for education. Thus, the general objective of this paper is to demonstrate a case study of a research group that focused on learning about physiotherapy treatment equipment, where the simple concept of representing equipment from a regular physiotherapy clinic in the metaverse resulted in the study of 3D equipment modeling technologies by students in the health and technology fields. As a method, the process followed this line: listing regular equipment used in physiotherapy treatments at a small clinic, learning about 3D modeling concepts and simulation of graphic processes and activities, and finally evaluating and comparing the equipment models generated in public metaverse environments and relativizing the real equipment. As a result, in addition to the learning of students from physiotherapy, medicine, and computer science courses, 6 3D models were successfully modeled in Autodesk Tinkercad® and Blender® tools compatible with public tools such as Spatial®, as well as the shared knowledge of both modeling and physiotherapy treatment objectives among students from different courses.
