Factors affecting Student Satisfaction in Online Educational Platforms

ABSTRACT:

With the prevalence of online learning, understanding student overall satisfaction in digital environments is increasingly important. This study investigates key factors influencing overall satisfaction on two major Vietnamese e-learning platforms: OLM.vn and Hoc24.vn. Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, an integrated model was built with three core constructs: User Interface (UI) Quality, User Experience (UX), and Content Quality, while also incorporating control variables including education level, gender, and geographical area. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), data from over 11,000 K–12 students indicated that all three main factors significantly affect overall satisfaction, with UI Quality exerting the strongest influence, followed by UX and Content Quality. The control variables were also found to be statistically significant, suggesting that satisfaction differs across student groups. Female and urban students reported higher levels of satisfaction, whereas secondary and high school students showed lower satisfaction than primary school students. The model accounts for 60.8% of the variance in overall satisfaction, emphasizing the dominant role of platform design and usability even after controlling for demographic and contextual characteristics. These findings emphasize the importance of improving both educational content and platform usability in a balanced way, while also providing practical recommendations for platform developers, educators, and policymakers aiming to enhance online learning in Vietnam and similar educational contexts.
