Designing a STEAM Pedagogical Model for Science: Linking Curriculum and Classroom in Low-Resource Contexts

ABSTRACT:

STEAM has been increasingly recognized as an emerging pedagogical approach. In line with global trends, Nepal has also initiated some efforts at both policy and practice levels to integrate STEAM education. The implementation of an integrated curriculum for Grades 1-3 through multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, teacher training initiatives related to STEAM approach, and establishment of STEAM clubs in some schools, represents some noticeable practices. However, the systematic integration of STEAM practices into the implementation of existing science curriculum remains limited. This study was conducted to propose a context-sensitive STEAM pedagogical model for science teaching by drawing insights from analysis of the existing basic level science and technology curriculum (grades 4-5), classroom practices, and relevant literature. This study employed a qualitative case study design, using content analysis of curriculum documents and thematic analysis of classroom observation and teacher interviews. The findings demonstrate that the curriculum provides considerable potential for STEAM integration and some promising classroom practices have already emerged. However, these practices remain fragmented, inconsistently structured, predominantly teacher-centered, and largely confined to disciplinary approaches. Based on the findings and insights of previous research studies, the study proposes a STEAM pedagogical model intended to guide teachers in meaningfully integrating STEAM practices into science teaching and learning processes, particularly in low-resource educational settings such as Nepal.
