AI-Aligned Assessment Practices for a Future-Ready Higher Education System

ABSTRACT:

The rapid integration of generative AI into educational, professional, and learning settings has prompted higher education institutions to reconsider traditional assessment methods. As students increasingly use AI tools for brainstorming, content creation, and problem-solving, traditional assessments based on memorisation or predictable outcomes no longer reliably measure independent learning or authentic skill development. This study examines ways to reimagine assessment practices to ensure they remain valid, ethical, and meaningful in an AI-enhanced higher education environment. It conducts a systematic review of 25 peer-reviewed articles published between 2022 and 2025, focusing on AI, assessment, academic integrity, and authentic learning in higher education. To enhance practical relevance, it includes practice-based examples from current higher education assessment design settings. These examples demonstrate how the principles from literature can be applied to develop authentic, AI-aligned assessment practices. Addressing the current lack of practical guidance for assessment design in AI-enhanced higher education, this review proposes a set of AI-aligned assessment principles that foreground critical thinking, ethical AI use, scenario-based application, process visibility, and transparent student–AI collaboration. It argues that sustainable assessment in the AI era requires not only integrity safeguards but also intentional design approaches that prepare students for complex, digitally mediated professional environments. The study contributes a practical, future-oriented assessment framework that supports academic integrity, authentic learning, and graduate preparedness in AI-enhanced higher education.
