Technology Aided Instruction and Intervention Utilized for Safety Skills Training for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities: A Review

ABSTRACT:

In recent years, Technology Aided Instruction and Intervention (TAII) has been widely used in the field of intervention for individuals with developmental disabilities (e.g. autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities) and has demonstrated distinct advantages. Technology is defined as any application, virtual network or electronic item or equipment, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, interactive whiteboards and computer software. This review aimed to evaluate the impact of TAII on safety skills intervention for individuals with developmental disabilities. After searching and screening databases, a total of 22 articles were included. The reviewed studies primarily addressed skills such as avoiding strangers, preventing abduction attempts, street-crossing skills, seeking help when lost, and ensuring safety during earthquakes and fires. In most cases, video modeling and virtual reality was found to be effective; however, some studies reported limited maintenance and generalization of the acquired skills. The findings showed particularly successful outcomes for primary school children. This study also discusses the limitations of these studies, as well as potential future research directions.
