Educational Interventions to Improve Safety in Inclusive Schools: Teacher Perspectives, Observations and Document Analysis
Dr. Derya Genc-Tosun, Hicran Denizli-Gulboy
ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine teachers’ views on the safety of students with special needs in the inclusive school environment, as well as current practices, risks encountered, and identified needs. The study aims to identify the safety skills of students with special needs, evaluate practices related to teaching these skills, and determine the adequacy of physical and educational arrangements in the school environment. The study was designed within a qualitative research framework. Three different tools were used in the data collection process: a semi-structured interview form, a classroom observation form, and a document review form. Through interviews, teachers’ perceptions of the safety needs of students with special needs, their teaching processes, the challenges they faced, and their proposed solutions were identified. Classroom observations examined the safety of the physical environment and the teachers’ processes for teaching and managing safety skills in a natural setting. Within the scope of document analysis, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) were analyzed to assess the level of integration of safety skills into the plans, as well as consistency in terms of teaching methods, materials, and assessment criteria. The results of the study suggest that both physical arrangements and planned instructional processes in school environments are of critical importance for the safety of students with special needs; however, various shortcomings and barriers are anticipated in practice. Accordingly, it is recommended that in-service training programs for teachers be developed, physical environments be made safer, and safety skills be addressed more systematically in IEPs.
