ABSTRACT:
Teaching Practices
On the contrary, if we have schools where students are urged to follow the school and class rules and have no barriers that prevent them from learning then and only then can teachers use innovative and required teaching practices and strategies to set the stage for success for all students.
Especially in the primary grades guided reading is vital to enable all students to learn to read at a steady pace and progress to reading more complex text. Guided reading practice can be conducted in more than one way. If the students cannot perform literacy center activities independently, then the teacher can conduct guided reading in a whole group setting until the students can read sight words and perform tasks independently.
Amplify program can be used where the teacher selects students to read the text aloud and supports the student. The teacher can focus on a specific skill at a time including word endings, word patterns etc. They can also have a discussion about the main events, main idea and character study as well as a whole group. In each session, at least 5 to 7 students can be picked to read. During the week, the teacher can get through the entire class for guided reading whole group sessions.
A balanced literacy program for a grade 2 class includes the following:
Day 1
The teacher will read aloud the book “Wolf in the Snow” followed by a discussion on the big ideas: compassion towards living things and survival
