From Flipped Classroom to AI-Enhanced Assessment: Sustained Pedagogical Innovations in Undergraduate Mathematics Education

ABSTRACT:
Various factors, notably the development of AI technology, have posed great challenges to teaching and assessment in various subjects and at various levels. As a mathematics educator at tertiary level, the author has made a number of endeavours to modernise the pedagogy to suit the changing needs. These include the implementation of flipped classroom instruction, production of lecture videos which incorporate animations to illustrate abstract mathematical concepts, building of systems that allow the generation of parameterised exercise for student practice, use of AI-assisted grading platforms, introduction of various assessment methods such as oral test, amongst others.
Studies and student comments have shown that such endeavours are effective in taking care of students with various backgrounds, improving the accuracy of grading, providing individualised feedback to students, as well as enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and communication skills. The author has received numerous competitive grants to work on the related projects, and has received the HKU Outstanding Teaching Award in 2024 in recognition of such sustained record of pedagogical leadership. These illustrate how evidence-based integration of technology and active learning strategies can enhance student engagement, feedback quality, and learning outcomes in higher education in mathematics, or more generally in STEM-related subjects. The approach offers a replicable model for mathematics educators in the AI era.
