Humanistic Teaching Materials and Activities Development for Personal and Emotional Involvement

Sakae Onoda

ABSTRACT:

L2 research shows that such humanistic and interactional materials and activities motivate learners to feel enjoyment, fun, achievable challenge, and intrinsic interest and encourages them to become involved in L2 learning both intellectually and emotionally and improves interactional skills and self-efficacy (Onoda, 2024; Tomlinson, 2023). Based on this finding, the presenter will introduce humanistic and interactional activities, including giving life to canned and routine dialogues frequently presented in textbooks, dramatizing and personalizing text reading with appropriate emotions, adding warm-up and follow-up activities connecting learners to their real-life world, group oral examinations involving real-life topics, interactive presentations, developing humanistic and authentic texts, and text reading followed by discussion in pairs after each paragraph. The presenter will show that intrinsic motivation instigates self-regulated learning strategies and willingness to communicate, thus improving L2 speaking skills.
The presenter will review each activity and discuss its contribution to improving learners’ interactional skills along with affective aspects of language learning, and conclude with a discussion of positive effects reported by learners along with practical applications of some of the humanistic and interactional materials and activities covered in this presentation.
