Different Children: Between Giftedness and Special Educational Needs – an Integrative Outlook

ABSTRACT:

Within the comprehensive framework of the concept of exceptional children—a term that encompasses a wide spectrum of learners, including both gifted and talented individuals as well as those with special educational needs (SEN)—there emerges the necessity for a well-grounded theoretical foundation, accompanied by the development and empirical validation of effective strategies aimed at ensuring their educational inclusion. The present study focuses on a particular subgroup within this broader category, namely gifted and talented children. It seeks to define the concept of giftedness, to explore its various levels and dimensions, and to identify the distinctive characteristics that typify gifted individuals. Subsequent analyses will broaden this inquiry by addressing the educational inclusion of children with SEN, recognizing that many of these learners may simultaneously exhibit diverse manifestations of giftedness. This conceptual approach substantiates the initial focus on the definition of giftedness, understood as a form of human potential that, to varying extents, can be identified in all children.
