Development of an Integrated Learning and Training Management System for Shipyard Welders
Bae-Sung Kim, Yun-Tae Woo, Doo-Hyun Jang
ABSTRACT:
Welding is one of the core technologies in manufacturing industries and is widely employed throughout production processes, playing a crucial role in determining product quality, durability, reliability, and productivity. In particular, in the shipbuilding industry, welding technology is a key factor in determining industrial competitiveness throughout the entire lifecycle, from design and production to quality control and maintenance. However, shipyards face increasing difficulties in attracting younger workers due to labor-intensive manual processes, large-scale structures, safety risks, and harsh working conditions. Consequently, the influx of new workers has declined, while the workforce is increasingly composed of experienced middle-aged and older workers, making the effective transfer of welding skills and expertise to the next generation more difficult. Therefore, an eXtended-Reality based welding simulator is being developed to support the learning and training of welding workers in shipyards. This paper presents an integrated learning and training management system interfaced with the welding simulator for structured support and improvement of trainees’ welding skills, along with LLM-based guidance to support the training process. The proposed system provides various functions, including learning management for welding trainees, progressive training courses, test evaluation and feedback, retraining instruction based on performance analysis, and personalized question-and-answer support.
