The Significance of Practical Spirituality in Hanmaum(One Mind) Education – Mind, Wisdom, and Interconnectedness

ABSTRACT:
This paper examines the educational philosophy of One Mind and Compassion proposed by the Korean Seon Master Daehaeng as a means to overcome the crises of modern society and prepare for the future. Master Daehaeng taught that the One Mind, the foundation of all human beings, embodies infinite potential, wisdom, and compassion. She proposed a meditation method that transcends the ego, entrusts everything to this fundamental One Mind, and harnesses the energy of the deep mind. She also emphasized the interconnectedness of all beings and the practice of compassion in relationships as a key educational objective. An ideal leader manifests this inherent One Mind, communicates through interconnectedness rather than discrimination, and utilizes the energy of the One Mind for the advancement of humanity across all fields. The education that Master Daehaeng advocates pursues the integration of reason and intuition, the material and the spiritual. It aims to cultivate open-minded leaders who can overcome the limitations of existing knowledge and creatively apply inner wisdom to their respective fields. Furthermore, leaders should possess a sense of social and historical responsibility. To achieve this, Master Daehaeng suggests a method of letting go of the ego, centering oneself in the One Mind, and entrusting everything to it. In today’s crisis-ridden society, Master Daehaeng reaffirms the importance of the mind, the interconnectedness of existence, and the power of compassionate practice in transforming society and the world. Cultivating our mind energy and practicing compassion in relationships can unleash our inherent human nature, serving as a powerful driving force for social change.
