AI as a Tool for Second Language Japanese Vocabulary Acquisition

Dr. Marc Sakellarios

ABSTRACT:

Vocabulary acquisition remains a persistent challenge for learners of Japanese as a second language, particularly in mastering complex compound kanji. This presentation examines the use of AI as a language-learning assistant to support vocabulary development and enhance morphological awareness (MA). Drawing on a self-study, I demonstrate how AI tools were used to analyze and reinforce lexical and grammatical patterns in Japanese. Morphological awareness was assessed through a baseline measure and a parallel post-intervention test, allowing for evaluation of learning gains following structured AI-assisted practice. The findings suggest that AI can function as an effective scaffold for developing deeper lexical understanding.
