The Profile of Students and Their Study Strategies: A Comprehensive Analysis
Maria de Fátima Goulão
ABSTRACT:
With the growing advancement of technology and the expansion of online education, there is a need to know the study strategies of students who attend this type of education. Study strategies play a crucial role in the academic success of students at all levels of education, from primary to postgraduate and in all types of education, from face-to-face to online. In our study we aimed to define the profile of a group of students who are attending the first year of an online degree programme. Our sample is composed by 166 students of both sexes, with an average age of 42. We used a questionnaire as our data collection tool, which allowed us to analyse the behaviour of these students. The answers obtained point to a strong confidence in their learning, a realistic definition of goals, self-knowledge, with careful management of study time, planning tasks and the study that must be done in good time when it comes to preparing for the assessment. The difficulty in studying with other people or in groups is seen as a less positive point. In conclusion, by developing and implementing study strategies adapted to the online context, students can maximise their learning, engagement, and academic success, thus avoiding dropouts.
