Integrating MTPE Training into Academic Curriculum Via Audiovisual Translation: A Course Design Proposal

ABSTRACT:

Translation Studies departments and Translator Training Programmes at universities introduce students to a multifaceted academic field that has to keep pace with a market that is always evolving and whose needs are changing as a result of technological advancements. Considering that it will take years for students to achieve linguistic quality levels and rapidity high enough to meet market demands before they graduate, machine translation and post-editing training should also be incorporated into the academic curriculum from the very first years of their instruction. In the translation industry, there is a consensus among scholars that Machine Translation and Post-editing (MTPE) processes should be introduced to students early on in their academic instruction because of the needs of the market. As a growing field which tries to keep pace with the newest technological developments, implementing Audiovisual Translation along with MTPE into the academic curriculum is not only significant in the way its market is expanding, but also it raises students’ awareness of the professional life awaiting them. This paper aims at presenting a proposal of a course design that integrates the use of MTPE in AVT.
