ABSTRACT:
Clinical practice is a cornerstone in the education of healthcare professionals (HPs). Structured learning activities (SLAs), predefined tasks used in peer learning and traditional supervision support students in achieving learning objectives. SLAs typically include preparation-, execution-, and reflection phases, and may be theoretical or practical, used individually or in groups.
This study aimed to explore preceptor´s perceptions of SLAs as effective tools during clinical placements across various HPs. Data were collected via questionnaires distributed to head preceptors at a university hospital in Sweden, in summer 2025, who then forwarded them to student preceptors of different HPs. A total of 204 responses were received from nurses (n=59), specialist nurses (n=58), assistant nurses (n=29), biomedical scientists (n=9), physiotherapists (n=20), occupational therapists (n=13), radiology nurses (n=2), and midwives (n=14). A thematic analysis was conducted.
Overall, 59 % of respondents used SLAs. Among these, 60 % rated SLAs positively, 39 % to some extent, and 1% negatively. Identified positive themes included clarity, structure, alignment with learning objectives, support for reflection, student independence, preceptor guidance, continuity, patient safety, and openness to change. Negative themes involved lack of time, limited knowledge, informal supervision, and perceived irrelevance.
Preceptors who used SLAs found them beneficial. Those who did not, cited lack of knowledge, time constraints, or organizational barriers. Increased education on SLAs may enhance their adoption. A key advantage is their applicability across all healthcare professions.
