Social and Emotional Learning in Slovenia a case study

Urška Pliberšek

ABSTRACT:

Social and emotional learning is a learning process through which adults, youth, and children acquire “protective competencies.” Among the most significant effects of social-emotional learning are higher academic achievement, increased motivation, engagement in schoolwork, and lower dropout rates. Teachers’ attitudes towards topics of social and emotional learning have not been widely studied. The aim of this research was to examine the attitudes of teachers in the Pomurska region (online survey) in Slovenia and to gain a deeper insight into teachers’ attitudes (focus group) towards social-emotional learning. We find that teachers have a positive attitude towards social and emotional learning, and report that social and emotional learning is important to their work. Teachers who use social-emotional learning strategies also report positive outcomes for their students. The limitation of this study is a small sample of respondents; however, we see an opportunity to further examine social and emotional learning in Slovenia.
