ABSTRACT:

Learners in rural schools of the Western Cape Province in South Africa face significant barriers that hinder their academic progress. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, socio-economic hardships, and limited access to learning resources. This study investigates the key learning barriers in these schools and proposes strategies to address them.
A mixed-methods approach was used, combining surveys and interviews with teachers, learners, and parents. The sample consisted of 150 participants from five rural schools. Quantitative data were analyzed statistically, while qualitative responses were thematically examined.
Findings revealed that 68% of schools lacked proper facilities such as libraries and laboratories, while 75% of learners struggled with transportation issues. Teacher shortages affected 60% of schools, leading to overcrowded classrooms and reduced individual attention. Socio-economic challenges, including food insecurity and lack of parental involvement, further contributed to poor academic performance.
To address these challenges, the study recommends improving school infrastructure, increasing teacher recruitment and training, and expanding government support programs such as school feeding schemes and transport assistance. Community engagement and digital learning initiatives should also be promoted to enhance educational outcomes.
Addressing these barriers is crucial for improving the quality of education in rural areas and ensuring equal learning opportunities for all learners.
