ABSTRACT:
This study presents a detailed descriptive study on the teaching of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to pre-service mathematics teachers (PSTs) using computer assisted instruction. Four groups of university mathematics pre-service teachers volunteered participating in this study. Students in small groups were asked to write their mathematical ideas as a script on a MATLAB and then save their work in a desktop after creating a folder for saving all workings based on the following activities. Their saved work on the desktop were printed and collected as data for analysis to present the ways that PSTs used MATLAB to generate codes, solve a differential equation and plot its graphs. It was found that PSTs enhanced their understanding of solving a differential equation, plotting its graphs and making interpretations from the drawn graphs. The finding has implications in teaching and learning differential equations and other mathematical concepts, including PSTs can use computer assisted instruction such as MATLAB codes to compute mathematical problems and plotting graphs taught in secondary schools after completion of their undergraduate degree programmes.
