Applying Creativity Skills Built in the Skills Builder Framework to Help Young Learners of Ages 5 and 6 to Solve Their Learning Tasks in Both Vietnamese and English

ABSTRACT:

Pedagogically, educational research indicates that children learn through interactions with surrounding environments. According to Piaget (1970), children are “active learners and thinkers”. Therefore, when adults can provide children with effective scaffolds, they will be able to construct their knowledge and develop their learning skills, especially creativity skills. Theoretically speaking, creativity skills are considered as “the skills of bringing something new and valuable” (Young, 1985). Researchers affirm that creativity happens when people use their imagination to transform things into better version and the creativity must be appropriate to the task at hand (Kaufman, 2016). When it comes to education, learners who are encouraged to apply their creativity in learning skills will be able to make connection with their previous knowledge to solve their current tasks. By doing this, learners have more opportunities to explore “a range of possibilities” and “arrive at a deeper understanding” of a situation in which they get involved (Chris Horner et al., 2007). Similarly, Skills Builder Partnership assert that when children use their imagination to generate new ideas, they will accordingly develop their problem solving skills. However, developing creativity skills for young learners requires careful step-by-step scaffold by educators. The fact is that Skills Builder Partnership have been developing and applying their Essential skills Framework over the past few years and witnessed considerable results in developing essential skills for people around the world (SkillsBuilderPartnership, 2024). Consequently, the authors of this research are interested in doing a research which studies the effectiveness of applying Skills Builder Framework to develop basic creativity skills for young learners of ages 5 and 6. Throughout the research, authors will apply Phase 1 named “Imagining and generating ideas” to build up “getting started” steps for learners, which focuses on “imagination, how to share those imaginings, and finally generate ideas to improve something or combine different concepts” (SkillsBuilderPartnership, 2020). The authors will conduct qualitative research using interviews and observations through video recordings in three months. The purpose of the research is to gather in-depth insights of how much the applying Skills Builder Framework helps develop young learners’ creativity skill to solve their learning tasks in both Vietnamese and English.
