The Role of Media in The Promotion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Uganda

ABSTRACT:

This research proposal explores the role of media in promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Uganda, addressing the pressing issue of low enrolment rates despite the recognized importance of TVET in fostering economic development and addressing skills shortages. The study will focus on a population of 460 individuals, including journalists, news editors of key media houses, employees of the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB), staff from TVET institutions, policymakers from the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), students enrolled in TVET programs, parents, secondary school career teachers, and development partners. A sample size of 210 participants will be determined using the statistical table by Krejcie & Morgan (1970) as cited by Amin (2005). Employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the research will utilize questionnaire surveys, interviews, and document reviews to assess the effectiveness of current media campaigns, evaluate stakeholder perspectives, and identify challenges and opportunities for enhancing media-TVET partnerships. Theoretical frameworks, including Agenda-Setting Theory and Diffusion of Innovations Theory, will guide the analysis of media’s influence on public perception and the adoption of TVET. This study aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and media organizations to formulate targeted strategies that elevate the status of TVET in Uganda. This research seeks to contribute to a positive shift in enrolment trends and perceptions of TVET, aligning educational initiatives with market demands and supporting national economic growth.
