Effectiveness of Corporate Environmental Responsibility in Enhancing Profitability and Environmental Sustainability at Al Ankabout Company, Syria
Mohammad Kher Raad
ABSTRACT:
The Syrian long-term war has resulted in environmental challenges that adversely influence business plans and activities, contributing to environmental degradation and humanitarian crises. Although this conflict can be critiqued as complex and chaotic, little substantial research has been published on its damaging effects on the business environment. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the environmental dimension of corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Al Ankabout Company for Remittance. It employs a small-scale qualitative case study as the research strategy. To collect some reliable and valid data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 stakeholders. The qualitative data gathered were analyzed by means of thematic analysis. The findings showed that corporate environmental responsibility could play a vital role in mitigating the negative effects of the Syrian conflict by positively influencing the business activities of Al Ankabout Company and enhancing profitability and ranking on such stakeholders as customers and suppliers. They also revealed that corporate environmental responsibility could boost environmental sustainability that focuses on the human value of the process of offering services and the quality of the environment, stakeholders and community as a whole. The significance of this study is that it makes a genuine contribution in self-scrutinizing the complex dynamics of corporate environmental responsibility at a private Syrian company. Specifically, this study recommended conducting more in-depth exploration on how corporate environmental responsibility is essential in establishing novel analyses and more accurate insights into wrestling with the environmental challenges of the Syrian crisis at both private and public companies.
