ABSTRACT:

Organizations from various sectors face the challenge of digital transformation (DT) in the contemporary business landscape. Digital maturity models (DMMs) are considered essential tools for assessing how far companies have progressed in their DT journey and for analyzing the DT process. Although frequently used in practice, these models have several limitations, such as being inflexible, uniform, and not adapted to the diversity and specific characteristics of organizations.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the literature on digital maturity models and to observe how they are designed and used in practice. The research is based on an analysis of recent academic articles from the Web of Science database. The findings highlight three different types of DMMs considering their characteristics: a) The strategic transformation mechanism and digital governance = ensures coherence between the organization’s strategy and digital efforts via explicit governance policies and effective technology integration); b) The modern management ecosystem = Facilitates innovation and collaboration using digital technologies, creating a flexible and cohesive environment for digital transformation and c) Performanceoriented approach = concentrates on quantifiable outcomes, evaluating digital transformation success via concrete effects on organizational performance.
Future research can deepen our understanding of digital maturity models in specific fields. Flexible and adaptable models tailored to organizational needs are essential to support managers and companies in managing digital change. Subsequent research could also explore new theoretical frameworks and methodologies for optimizing DMMs and facilitating the transition to modern, innovation-based management through the adoption of digital transformation.
