Convergence, Divergence, and Crossvergence of National Values: The Case of Italy and India
Antony Girlando, Nina Eduljee, David Pinchbeck
ABSTRACT:
This exploratory cross-cultural study examines whether national values, as conceptualized by Hofstede’s Six-Dimensional Model (2013), remain stable or change over time. The Value Survey Module (Hofstede & Minkov, 2013) which comprises six indices was used. Focusing on Italy and India as comparative case studies, the research draws on three key theoretical perspectives, convergence, divergence, and crossvergence, to frame the cultural evolution of these nations. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using survey data from two student samples: Italian students (n = 379) and Indian students (n = 291). The overall findings suggest cultural convergence in the dimensions of Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance, while divergence was observed in Individualism, Masculinity, Long-Term Orientation, and Indulgence over the past six decades. Implications of the results are discussed.
