The Need for Family Labor in Helping to Increase the Productivity of Smallholder Palm Oil Production

ABSTRACT:

Labor is an important resource for the oil palm sector, especially for the operation and management of small oil palm plantations. The use of labor as an input and resource in helping to increase the production of small oil palm plantations. Labor for small oil palm plantations consists of hired labor and also family members of the smallholders themselves. Family members involved in working on small oil palm plantations usually consist of wives, children and relatives who are heirs of the small oil palm plantation owners themselves. Family labor is an important component in increasing the production productivity of small oil palm plantations, especially in rural areas. Therefore, this study examines the importance of family labor in helping to increase the production productivity of small oil palm plantations. This study uses a quantitative method and the respondents are small oil palm plantations. The need for family labor is important where ‘Family Labor’ which focuses on small oil palm family members is also indirectly involved in private oil palm plantation activities. The largest involvement of smallholder labor is among the smallholder owner households, namely the husband or father, followed by the wife and children and close relatives who help inherit the work of small oil palm plantations. Overall, the need for family labor is very important in assisting with the work and tasks in oil palm planting activities, including harvesting, fertilizing, unloading fresh fruit bunches, collecting and collecting broken oil palm fruit seeds, cutting palm fronds, weeding and spraying in the area around the oil palm plantation. Therefore, the need for labor from among smallholder family labor is very important in helping to increase the economic income and productivity of smallholder oil palm production.
