ABSTRACT:

This research offers a thorough examination of gender stereotypes prevalent in educational textbooks, with a focus on their implications for learners and societal attitudes. Through a systematic content analysis of our institution’s English textbook, we investigate overt and subtle manifestations of gender biases. Additionally, we survey educators and learners to gauge their perspectives on gender issues in teaching and learning. Our findings reveal recurring patterns that reinforce traditional gender roles and harmful stereotypes, highlighting a disparity between educators’ and learners’ viewpoints. To assess the impact of these stereotypes on students’ perceptions of gender roles, we analyze the extent to which they perceive certain occupations as gender-specific. Participants were presented with sentences containing missing pronominal pronouns associated with occupations traditionally linked to a specific gender, with the aim of revealing deeply ingrained stereotypes pertaining to casual sex in people’s minds and exploring other socio-economic predictors as explanatory factors.
