Investigation of Visual Mathematics Literacies of Pre-service Middle School Mathematics Teachers
Yasemin KATRANCI and Sena YILDIZ
ABSTRACT:
The first aim of this study was to examine the visual mathematics literacies of pre-service middle school mathematics teachers and to determine the level of the visual mathematics literacies of them. The second was to investigate whether their literacies regarding visual mathematics differ significantly according to their gender and grade-levels. It was a survey study. Accordingly, 194 pre-service middle school mathematics teachers participated in the study. The Visual Mathematics Literacy Scale was used as a data collection instrument. The validity and reliability analyses showed that the collected data was valid and reliable. Therefore, to reach the first aim, descriptive statistics were done. Then, to reach the second aim, it was checked whether the data distributed normal or not. The normality tests showed all the data distributed normally and it was decided to use the parametric tests. According to this, independent sample t-test was used for analyzing the data related to gender and One-Way ANOVA was used for grade-levels. As a result, the visual mathematics literacies of pre-service middle school mathematics teachers are at high-level. While their visual mathematics literacies do not show a meaningful difference according to their gender, they differ significantly considering their grade-levels. The grade-level has an almost moderate effect on visual mathematics literacies.
