ABSTRACT:
Teaching and learning activities occur daily, irrespective of where they occur. Educationally, teaching and learning occur in two forms: formal and informal. Each has rewarding benefits for both the teacher and the learner. Mother tongue is an excellent asset in teaching and learning activities, whether in formal or informal education and is the best means of imparting knowledge of culture to all and sundry, especially to children in early childhood. National, Ethnic and Tribal cultures that seem to be disappearing fast in many Countries should be a thing of concern, and research has shown and proven the great potential that music has in making children learn and its influence on their general development. This being the case, teaching and learning activities using music in the mother tongue to teach these children will expose them to their culture and preserve it since children love and enjoy music. This paper investigates the cultural implications of the mother tongue in the teaching and learning of music in early childhood education. Data for the study is collected through questionnaires and interviews with mothers and teachers in the selected pre-primary schools and areas. Moreover, conclusions were drawn based on the findings. The findings proved that cultures can be preserved using music and teaching children through their mother tongue.
