Value-driven Leadership Training for the Development of Reformed Public Education
Dr. Pál Iván Szontagh
ABSTRACT:
Nowadays, there is a consensus among management theorists that management trainings and further education in the field of school leadership is one of the most important conditions for quality public education. The Hungarian Public Education Strategy (2020) also considers the training of institution managers to be of particular importance. The network of church-run public education institutions, whose significant expansion has taken place in Hungary since 2010, is no exception to this. Since 2018, the public education network of Reformed Church, as an independent subsystem of public education in Hungary, has had its own leadership training that is attentive to the specifics of Christian education and supports the mission of the maintainer church. In our paper, we review the period between 2018-2023, in which Protestant public education leadership training progressed from the thematic conference through 30-hour-long accredited teacher training to the status of legally mandatory postgraduate training. The professional background of the training was developed in close cooperation with Driestar University in the Netherlands, using the experiences and elements of the international Value Driven Leadership training. Our current training is one of the six public education leadership training programs in Hungary that provide professional qualifications for institutional management. In our study, based on participation data and participant’s feedbacks and reflections, we document and evaluate scientifically this professional innovation, giving an outlook on the combined training organization of postgraduate courses of the Faculty of Pedagogy of Károli Gáspár University.
