AI-Based Learning: Opportunities and Challenges
Sylvia Chong
ABSTRACT:
Technology continues to evolve and affect how learning is enacted and experienced. Since the late 1990s, the affordances of technologies have transformed the sharing, remixing, and networking in learning environments. The e-learning market is a multibillion-dollar industry that continues to grow. One of its key market drivers is AI technology. With the generative AI market projected to grow at a rate of 76.9% per year, the AI market in teaching and learning is expected to reach an impressive USD 80 billion by 2030s. AI-based learning applications expand teaching and learning environments beyond the traditional classroom and open a range of opportunities for teaching and learning. AI-based technologies are dynamic and automated and interact with human activity, at unprecedented speed and scale. However, AI-based learning also presents several challenges and limitations. These challenges are often linked with ethical issues. As with many new technologies, the rise of AI and other technologies highlights the importance of using and developing them in an ethical way. There is a need for students to learn the strengths and limitations of AI and how to use it for learning. With the rapid adoption and increasing complexity, the necessity for robust AI governance. to ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI. Addressing this will require a coordinated effort across all education levels and all policy areas. This presentation will discuss some of the opportunities and the need for an ethical framework for AI in Education.
