Promoting Students’ Positive Feelings Through Job Prospects and Teacher Attributes: An Examination Through the Lens of Self-Determination Theory in Science Achievement Among Abu Dhabi Students
Othman Abu Khurma
ABSTRACT:
This study used secondary analysis of TIMSS data from 8,200 students in Abu Dhabi to examine the relationship between students’ positive feelings about school, teacher’s attribute, job prospects in science and science achievement. The study employed the structural equation modelling (SEM) approach to investigate the relationships among the observed variables, assuming that Job Prospects and Teacher Attributes can mediate the relationship between “Positive feeling about school” and science achievement. The results revealed that students’ positive feelings about school, job prospects and teacher attributes positively impacted the science achievement of students. However, both associations with and without the mediators were statistically significant to science achievement. The research implies that the initiatives should be undertaken by policymakers and educators to utilize teacher attributes and job prospects to foster the positive feeling about school and increase the perceived usefulness of learning science which result in their enhanced science achievement and better outcomes in science learning.
