Redefining The Concept of Teacher Noticing: The Creation and Implementation of The Initial Teacher Education Noticing Continuum (TEN) And the Noticing Observation Framework (NOF)

ABSTRACT:

Over the past decade, research has increasingly explored the concept of teacher noticing. Throughout all these studies, the connecting thread is making sense of how individuals process complex situations via video viewing as a means to develop their professional vision (PV). This presentation showcases part of a wider study and discusses three original contributions to knowledge. The investigation adopted a mixed methods methodology, with a multiple case study design, with 9 participants (pre-service trainees FES 14+), with an equal QUAL/QUANT methods mix. The concept of teacher noticing, and PV is redefined with an expanded theoretical framework. Moreover, the novel creation and implementation of the Initial Teacher Education Noticing Continuum (TEN) has expanded our understanding of how trainees’ PV develops over time, and it has allowed for new insights into the levels of sophistication they use to do so. Furthermore, the Noticing Observation Framework (NOF) has created new knowledge that informs current discourse regarding the observation of pre-service trainee teachers’ teaching practice via video viewing. Consequently, the creation and implementation of the TEN provided clear evidence that pre-services trainee teachers’ PV became more sophisticated and showed significant (p<.05 to p<.001) improvement over time. Moreover, the data emerging from the NOF, recorded over three measures per participant indicated that teaching practice improved significantly (p<.013 to p<.006) over time, thus indicating that noticing is a central concept of teacher proficiency and effective instructional practice. The presentation concludes with considerations pertaining to implications and impact.
