Empathy in Practice: Case Studies on Transforming ESD through LXD
Eman AbuKhousa
ABSTRACT:
This paper explores the practical implementation and impact of combining Learning Experience Design (LXD) with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through an empathy-driven methodology derived from Design Thinking. It investigates the effectiveness of this approach in creating highly personalized and emotionally resonant learning experiences in higher education that align with sustainable development goals. The paper will discuss various case studies across diverse educational settings, illustrating how this integration can be applied to foster a deeper understanding and commitment to sustainability among learners. The focus is not only on the cognitive transfer of knowledge but also on nurturing an emotional connection to global challenges, thereby motivating learners to become proactive agents of change. This approach represents a significant shift towards more engaging, impactful, and learner-centered education in sustainability, with the potential to make a lasting difference in how learners perceive and interact with the world around them.
