Navigating the Intricacies of Psychosis: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Psychologist’s Experiences with Schizophrenia and Related Psychoses

ABSTRACT:

Schizophrenia and related psychoses are among the most complex and stigmatised mental health conditions, presenting unique challenges for both clients and clinicians. Despite the increasing emphasis on recovery-oriented approaches, the subjective experiences of psychologists working therapeutically with this population remain under-explored. This research aims to deepen understanding of how counselling psychologists conceptualise and engage with schizophrenia and psychosis in clinical practice.
The intersection of counselling psychology and schizophrenia remains a relatively underexplored area. Existing literature highlights the emotional and professional challenges therapists face, particularly the strain on empathetic ability, and concerns about inadvertently triggering relapse in those experiencing psychotic symptoms. Stigma and misconceptions contribute to therapist’s apprehensions, while clients often regard the therapeutic relationship as fundamental to the development of self-awareness and identity development. Research highlights the critical importance of therapists engaging in reflective practice to better understand the dynamics of their interactions with clients.
This research aims to explore the experiences of six counselling psychologists who have worked with clients affected by psychosis related disorders. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis of semi-structured interviews, the research will provide an in-depth exploration of how psychologists navigate the intricacies of therapeutic work in this domain. The research intends to contribute valuable insights into the field of counselling psychology, through deepening the understanding of therapeutic challenges and best practices when working with this client group, including insights into the emotional, relational, and ethical complexities.
