Integrative Cognitive-Emotional Regulation Method Based on Verbal Affirmations and Physiological Activation: A Controlled Study

Yulia Velishaieva

ABSTRACT:

Cognitive-emotional regulation remains a central topic in contemporary psychology and behavioral sciences, requiring the development of integrative approaches that simultaneously address cognitive, emotional, and physiological processes [1,2]. While verbal affirmation techniques are widely used as tools for modifying internal beliefs, their effectiveness remains inconsistent, suggesting the need for structured and multi-level interventions [3,4].
The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an integrative cognitive-emotional method combining verbal affirmations, mirror-based self-perception, and controlled physiological activation through breathing, in comparison with standard affirmation practice. A total of 160 participants were included in a quasi-experimental design and divided into two groups: a control group practicing affirmations only (n = 80) and an experimental group applying a structured protocol (n = 80). The intervention lasted four weeks and involved twice-daily practice.
Standardized psychometric instruments were used, including measures of emotional intelligence, cognitive emotion regulation, self-efficacy, perceived stress, and mindfulness [5–9].
The results demonstrated significantly greater improvements in the experimental group across all variables. Emotional intelligence increased by 17% compared to 6% in the control group, adaptive cognitive regulation improved by 14% compared to 5%, self-efficacy increased by 19% compared to 8%, while perceived stress decreased by 18% compared to 6%. Mindfulness increased by 16% compared to 5%. The findings suggest that the integration of physiological activation and self-referential processing significantly enhances the effectiveness of affirmation-based practices, contributing to deeper cognitive restructuring and improved emotional regulation.
