A Study on the Application of the Output-Oriented Approach in the Compilation of English Textbooks for Higher Vocational Education: A Case Study of “New Standard Vocational English”
Shuyi Zhu
ABSTRACT:
This study, based on the compilation process of the vocational college foreign language textbook “New Standard Vocational English,” employs questionnaire surveys and action research methods to demonstrate the feasibility of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) in the compilation of vocational English textbooks. During the implementation of the POA in textbook compilation, a challenge was identified: vocational textbooks are required to develop students’ communication skills in international professional settings, which involves completing specific workplace output tasks, typically writing or oral tasks. The POA demands that input materials strictly serve the output tasks. This raises an issue where the textbook resembles a manual, lacking in engagement and failing to fulfill educational objectives. Through surveys among editors and trials in teaching, the editors optimized the sample lesson structure by establishing unit communication scenarios, setting “being” and “doing” goals, with Section A focusing on “being” and Section B on “doing.” Section A addresses the textbook’s ideological, engaging, and educational requirements, while Section B tackles the curriculum standards for workplace communication skills. Section A provides the knowledge and values to support Section B, and both sections collectively serve the unit’s project output. The optimized sample lesson structure has gained widespread approval from all participating editors and trial teachers. This is just one feasible model of applying the Production-Oriented Approach in the compilation of vocational English textbooks, which can be referenced and further developed into more application cases.
