ABSTRACT:

The Andrew Tate Effect is a phenomenon where neoliberal ideologies and traditional patriarchal values are combined, creating a radical version of masculinity that influences Middle Eastern men’s behavior and perceptions. This phenomenon is influenced by the popularity of online figures like Tate, who preach traditional masculinity and showcase their lifestyle. Through establishing gender and dehumanization theory within the context of the manosphere online (i.e. forums on platforms such as Reddit), the paper seeks to examine how alt-right online rhetorics manifest themselves in the Middle East. This study examines how Tate’s ideology resonates within a cultural context where his radical ideas often reinforce pre-existing social norms. The research was conducted through individual interviews and focus groups with male teenagers and young adults to examine further the possible link between capitalist-driven masculinity and a valorization of aggressive masculinities. The result is a deeper appreciation for how Andrew Tate and others like him are becoming the new center of discourse on masculinity and the toxic effects of that shift.
