From Glass Ceilings to Leadership Ladders: Women Leaders’ Impact on Preparing Female Subordinates for Leadership
Ly-Huong, Le
ABSTRACT:
In the predominantly male-led academic environment of the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) in Vietnam, the presence and influence of female leaders are both critical and underexplored. Despite a significant number of female teachers, leadership positions are largely held by men. This study investigates whether the few existing women leaders at ULIS impact the professional growth and leadership preparation of their female subordinates. Utilizing surveys, in-depth interviews, and institutional policy analysis, this research seeks to identify any strategies and practices employed by female leaders to support their female colleagues. While concrete evidence of such support is yet to be determined, the study aims to reveal potential mentorship roles, professional development initiatives, and advocacy efforts that may help women overcome systemic barriers. The findings from ULIS could offer valuable insights for other Vietnamese academic institutions striving for gender parity in leadership, providing a foundation for implementing supportive measures and fostering a more inclusive academic environment.
