ABSTRACT:

The political arena of the 21st century, leaders like former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin exemplify the strong rise of female leaders on the international stage. Similarly, Asia, despite its long history of prejudice and discrimination against women,  has produced notable female leaders such as Empress Wu Zetian of the Wu Zhou dynasty in China (690-705). More recently, figures like Nguyen Thi Binh, former Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Chief Negotiator at the Paris Peace Accords (1968-1973), have emerged. And,  It is impossible to deny the fact that, until now, Asia is still a place where the rate of gender inequality is still quite high, with a figure of 35%. % of women in South Asia cannot write or understand a short, simple sentence, 46.5% of young women are not participating in any form of education, employment or training opportunities (unicef, 2022). However, the former Taiwanese Prime Minister Tsai Ing-wen has brought remarkable development to Taiwan, with the economy growing an average of 3.15% per year during her eight-year term. (Strong, 2024). The 21st century has seen a significant increase in the presence and influence of Asian women leaders across various sectors globally. Overcoming numerous societal barriers where women have traditionally been undervalued, this research will draw on historical data, economic development trends, and contemporary studies. It aims to identify the factors contributing to the success of female leaders in Asia and how to address long-standing prejudices against women in Asia.
