ABSTRACT:

Higher education in South Africa has undergone digital transformation (DT) over the years. To comprehend the educational landscape in South Africa, one must first comprehend the history of the country. This work examines DT in South Africa, and it highlights the challenges it poses that were further heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also provides an outline of South Africa’s education sector. Through the systematic review of literature, the study concluded that the education industry must overcome various problems posed by both the external and internal environments as part of the digital transformation process. Internal aspects include how schools and universities work, implementation challenges, and broader policy changes brought on by digital transformation. Some of these challenges include infrastructure challenges, cultural shifts, cyber security and training needs among others. The education authorities need to pay attention to these challenges as they can hinder progress related to digital transformation.
