ABSTRACT:

Monitoring a speaking task with large class sizes that enables us as teachers, to give students targeted feedback, can be challenging. Our role as a monitor involves wearing many different hats pre, during and post task, such as, matchmaker, facilitator, data gatherer, informer, action planner and teacher. In addition to managing these roles, we need to identify and record student samples of speech that will guide us as teachers to provide targeted and purposeful feedback for our students and, that will inform our teaching practice moving forward.
This presentation will look at some key challenges faced when monitoring speaking tasks and suggest practical ways to address these obstacles. Information retrieved from effective monitoring can then be used to provide purposeful and actionable feedback to students on their speaking performance. Furthermore, it guides us with our reflection and classroom research in identifying gaps and areas that need improved input.
