Beyond Efficiency: A Design Framework for Integrating AI and Developing Professional Skills

ABSTRACT:
As AI tools reshape higher education, a critical question emerges: how do we ensure that students develop the professional capabilities, such as adaptive thinking, ethical judgment, relational intelligence, and authentic voice – the skills that employers increasingly demand and that AI cannot replicate? The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report (2025) identifies skills such as these as the fastest growing needs, yet most faculty lack the vocabulary and design tools to teach toward them intentionally. This presentation introduces the GROW framework, a four-phase instructional design process for purposefully integrating AI into learning sequences while protecting irreducible human professional capabilities. GROW guides faculty through four design decisions: Guard the Non-Negotiable (identify the professional capabilities AI cannot replace), Read the Task Ecology (map where AI adds value versus where it introduces risk), Outline the Trellis (design scaffolded AI interactions with embedded metacognitive checkpoints), and Watch for Authentic Evidence (assess transfer of skills, knowledge, and attitudes through performances that require genuine human judgment).
Implementation evidence from a graduate course in educational leadership and instructional technology illustrates the framework in action. Using a custom AI chatbot designed as a thinking partner rather than an answer machine, the course embedded intentional AI interactions across a five-week learning sequence. Interaction transcripts and learning artifacts will illustrate how students engaged with the chatbot to cultivate professional skills. An unaided culminating video assessment served as the integrity check, requiring situated knowledge and genuine empathy that outsourced AI-generated work could not produce. This presentation provides attendees with a practical, theoretically grounded model for AI course integration that keeps human expertise and professional skill development at the center of the learning experience.
