Satirical News Shows in the Age of Covid-19
Najla Lilya Jaballah
ABSTRACT:
Media and the news have always been a powerful army for every nation. Thus, the news discourse breeds one angle of investigation for scholars to reveal the value and profound impact of different political-satire news shows. Especially, during Covid-era, when the globe has mainly counted on virtual communication and virtual space for information. In fact, the current research investigates the impact of Covid-19 on different satirical news shows. It reveals how people can reveal disagreement through humour and how different ideological stances can breed in these shows. It also deals with the conspiracy theories that arise from the news media and how this has different sociocultural dimensions. The study selects two famous episodes from two different and global shows: ‘‘The Daily Show’’ in the USA and ‘‘The Joe Show’’ in Egypt. They are both displayed and available on YouTube. The first episode is entitled: ‘‘Republicans Take Omicron Conspiracies to a New Level (The Daily Show)’’, published on December 1st, 2021. The second one performed by the ‘‘Joe Show’’ is entitled ‘‘Corona’’ and published on March 12th, 2020. Hence, the study seeks to achieve the previous aims through the implementation of Critical Discourse Analysis method. To further illustrate, it applies Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of 1995. The model includes three levels of analysis: Text, discursive practice, and social practice. Despite the variety of topics and debates surrounding ‘‘The Daily Show’’ and the ‘‘Joe Show’’, Covid-19 has brought these shows to a different new level of critique and satire.
