Feminism in the Bangladeshi Context: Evolution, Challenges, and Progress

Fakhrul Abedin Tanvir, Mahabuba Islam Mitu

ABSTRACT:

Feminism in Bangladesh has evolved through historical, cultural, and political transformations shaped by colonial resistance and the Liberation War of 1971. Initially centered on urban activism, it has gradually expanded to include grassroots movements advocating for women’s rights, equality, and social justice. Bangladeshi feminism addresses critical issues such as gender-based violence, economic disparity, political exclusion, and digital harassment while amplifying the voices of rural women, garment workers, and marginalized communities. Despite remarkable progress in education, labor participation, and policy reform, deep-rooted patriarchy, social conservatism, and institutional barriers continue to challenge gender equity. Therefore, feminism in Bangladesh stands as a dynamic and evolving movement that integrates global feminist ideals with local realities to foster empowerment and lasting social transformation.
