Use of Metric Studies of Information as a Support Strategy in the Research of Students in a Professional Master’s Degree Program in Network, In Brazil

Metric studies of information, such as Bibliometrics, have the function of analyzing information from Science and Technology activities. Bibliometric techniques are used to measure, understand and evaluate the results found in bibliographic research (BR). This paper aims to describe the proposed implementation of bibliometric review and analysis as a support strategy in the development of academic productions in students of PROFSAÚDE, a professional master’s program in the field of public health, offered at a distance, online, in Brazil . A course on special topics in the production of academic-scientific texts was offered, containing the module “Mapping scientific productions in health: application of bibliometric procedures and tools”. In the initial stage, out of 54 students, 70% reported some degree of difficulty in structuring the BR; besides not knowing about bibliometrics. The contents were directed to bibliographic research methodology, characteristics and uses of bibliometrics, bibliometric indicators and basic procedures for the development of bibliometric reviews in health using databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. The active methodology included asynchronous activities by Google Classroom which concentrated bibliographic material for study and telepresence activities for the discussion of texts and practical exercises in groups. The evaluation included a BR related to their interests in public health research, identifying the temporal evolution of the topic, the most cited documents and authors, and other bibliometric indicators, with subsequent teacher feedback. The search for bibliographical references constitutes a fundamental step in the development of academic works, having relevance strategies that improve this process.
