ABSTRACT:
This article describes educational models and how they promote generic competencies in the curricula of Salvadoran universities. Generic competencies are the basis for all professional training, for better interpersonal relationships, teamwork, critical thinking, assertive communication among others. This article is derived from a qualitative, hermeneutic study with in-depth interviews with experts responsible for creating study programs. The phenomenological analysis exposes the most representative ideas, through analysis categories that explain the incorporation of generic competencies from university educational models, considering five analysis categories: 1-Educational models, 2-Educational approaches, 3Theories that support educational models, 4-Methodological strategies to develop generic competencies and 5-Development of generic competencies in undergraduate curricula. It was found that educational models are diverse, traditional models by objectives, personalistic, constructivist and multimodal are mentioned, but ultimately they are oriented towards humanistic and integral formation. The models are based on different approaches and theories; the strategies for incorporating generic competencies are done through curricular committees and through activities and methodologies in study programs. It is concluded that although educational models are diverse, they all seek to strengthen students’ theoretical and practical mastery, with greater emphasis on professional discipline and with less clarity on generic competencies and that gradually improvements and updates are being incorporated in response to the demands of the work environment.
