ABSTRACT:

South African universities have implemented various intervention programs to address obstacles that may hinder students’ academic success and integration into the university environment. These programs address factors such as cultural background, education level, and socio-economic status, which research has identified as potential barriers to a smooth transition into university life. At the Durban University of Technology, programs such as General Education modules, First Year Student Experiences, Residence Tutorials, and Academic Advising have been introduced to support students and facilitate their adjustment to university life. The university is committed to inclusive education and providing opportunities for students from all backgrounds to succeed. However, due to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2022, students had to attend online classes and participate in online interventions. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of these intervention programs in supporting students’ short-term and long-term learning goals and fostering lifelong learning. To assess students’ coping mechanisms during the transition period and the impact of intervention programs on their learning and adjustment, second and third-year students were given questionnaires and participated in focus group discussions. The study recommended continuous review and re-alignment of the intervention programs based on the data and students’ feedback. The findings underscored the importance of these programs in promoting teaching and learning excellence, student success, and lifelong learning.
