Women as Accomplices and Bystanders of Honour-based Violence: Case of Honour Killings in Turkey

Firangiz Gulizada

ABSTRACT:

Women’s attitudes and behaviours towards honour killings should be closely examined, considering the fact that the most known victims of honour-related homicides are women. Honour killings are quite prevalent in Turkey; however, women’s role in these killings beyond victims is understudied. Reported cases or the media and literature highlights on male-on-female honour-based killings cover up women’s either forced or voluntary participation in these crimes. Thus, women’s role in honour killings as either accomplices or bystanders is one of the most overlooked issues in the discourse of honour-based violence. Hence, this paper attempts to present a concise overview of the honour-based killings in Turkey and women’s role in the perpetuation of these crimes.
