Literary Criticism as an Online Course Offered to Students of The Department of English at the World Islamic Sciences and Education University (WISE)

Dr. Layla Farouq Abdeen

ABSTRACT:

Literary criticism is a comprehensive literary course that derives hypotheses and theories from mythology, psychology, sociology, and feminism; to name a few. It is an advanced literary course that is interesting both to instructors as well as students for it allows one to think, analyze, and eventually conclude relevant ideas. Students are encouraged to offer their thoughts based on their application of the principles of the diverse schools of thought as that will inevitably enrich their overall comprehension of such a sophisticated course.

In the didactic process, face to face instruction has proven to be extremely essential as eye contact is required to deliver information in a more explicit and sufficient manner. Since literary criticism is a demanding course that requires to be taught through actual instruction in the traditional environment, being obliged to deliver such a course through online instruction instead due to the recent worldwide pandemic of COVID -19 and its aftermath did pose a considerable challenge. In spite the fact that this course is specified to potential graduates of the Department of English at the World Islamic Sciences and Education University (WISE) in Jordan, a number of hinderances did occur.

This article investigates how the deliverance of literary criticism has been somewhat possible despite the obstacles that were constantly present during online education. Therefore, the methodology through which instruction has been delivered, the material of the course, the obstacles that occurred, and the students’ responses will be focused upon. These observations are collected and investigated though first-hand experiences.
